Jordan Population

A national census for year 2004 that was released in same year gave the following results. In October 2004, population of Jordan was 5,100,981, census estimated that are also another 190,000 who were un-counted for being out of country for at census time, census also showed that there was 2.5% of national growth rate compared to 3.3% of census 1994. Census shows that 51.5% was made up by males while 48.5% by females. Citizens of Jordan made up 93% of population while non-Jordan made 7%. There were about 946,000 families in the Jordan till 2004 with average of 5.3 persons per family. Next census is scheduled and has to place in 2014.

 

During year 2004-2007, country saw a rapid increase in the population due to heavy migration of refugees from Iraq, census of 2007 that was an independent census, estimated that 700,00 Iraqis are residing in the Jordan. That put the population of Jordan slightly over 6,000,000 as year 2007. Over 94% of Jordan population is Arabs while remaining are non-Arabs such as Armenians, Chechens, Caucasians, Gypsies and Kurds. Number of Lebanese parliament settling in Jordan since 2006, it is estimated to be little.

 

Number of guest workers in country stands at over 300,000 in which most are from the Egypt who make 227,000 of foreign labor, while remaining 36,150 workers are from Chine, India and Sri Lanka. Jordanian Christians are the permanent residents that form approx: 6% of population and these are allocated having respective seats in the parliament.

 

Official language of country is Arabic while English is also spoken widely in the government and commerce among educated people. English and Arabic are obligatory learning at the public as well as private schools. At some private schools French is also taught but it not obligatory. Radio of Jordan offers the services in Arabic language in French and English as well.
